Halloween opening

The original Halloween was directed by John Carpenter and wrote by John Carpenter and Debra Hill.

The description of this film (posted on IMDB) : A psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood escapes on a mindless rampage while his doctor chases him through the streets.

The budget for this film was an estimated $320,000

Gross
$47,000,000 (USA)
$60,000,000 (Worldwide) ( 1978)
AUD 900,000 (Australia) ( 1979)
$782,277 (Germany)
HKD 450,139 (Hong Kong) ( 1979)
SEK 2,298,579 (Sweden)

The opening of this film, is a classic opening. The modern day horrors tend to have a 'normal' setting and do not back track on the past of the film(the very beginning of how it all started.)
However this film does. The opening shows how Michael becomes a killer.
The camera shot at first is a point of view shot(Michael's P.O.V) and you see him putting on a mask and going to the kitchen. This has an eerie affect to it, as you can't see the person however you can see what he sees.
The effect on the camera is that we can see through the eye holes of the mask however we can still see the holes. It's quite a low angle shot, showing he's either small or looking down.
When he reaches the kitchen. There is a medium shot of him opening the kitchen drawer and picking up a knife, which then goes to a medium close up of the knife, this signifies that the knife is significant to the plot.
However Michael still goes unseen.
This gives the audience the killers P.O.V. and can see everything around him rather than the person him self.
We continue to assume the killer is an adult untill after the murder takes place and he is unmasked outside by a doctor, to reveal that the killer is actually a child.
This is a medium shot and then it changes into a crane shot and directs its self into the night sky, this could resemble the passage of time.

    Opening scene:

The opening scene shows the title of the film one the scream.
The title goes from being white and stretched across the screen to being reduced in size and red. The white connoted innocents whereas, the red connotes evil/murder/blood. This signifies that the film goes straight from good to evil in the matter of seconds.
Whilst this is happening there is screaming over the top, signifying that is a horror.
It soon then cuts to a medium shot of the phone ring, and a hand picking it up.
Casey(Drew Barrymore) answers the phone, this is a medium close up shot of her speaking on the phone. There is a man on the other side, suggesting that it could be a prank 'chat up' phone call. Instead of having an actual conversation the man on the other side answers Casey's answers with more answers. This shows that it's not a normal conversation between friends, it's the fact that they don't know each other, makes it more daunting to the viewers. Also the tone of voice he uses on the phone, it doesn't make him seem like the phone call was by accident, he knew what he was doing.
When Casey is walking away, there is a slight panning shot, and when the phone rings again, it zooms in a tiny bit, not so much that the audience would notice. There is then another close up on Casey picking up the phone, which is then shown to be a low tilt movement, to then show the phone next to Casey's ear. This time he says 'Wait don't hang up, i want to talk to you for a seconds' this may signify that he wants to know Casey, maybe before killing her. She refuses and hangs up, she disappears out of the shot, and leaving the french doors on display which is viewing a quiet back garden, this makes the audience think the person who's calling Casey will appear, walking past. However this does not happen, this is used to build up tension and make the audience on edge. The shot cuts straight to the outside view of the house from the back garden, this make signify the killers/stalkers P.O.V, this shot is a high angle tilt from the tree down to the eye-line match of the house from perhaps the person who keeps ringing Casey. It cuts to Casey putting the hob on to make some popcorn, this makes the viewer jump as they weren't expecting it as the were expecting something more terrifying. There is then and zoom out of the popcorn pan to the view of Casey. The phone then rings again, there is a panning shot of her walking to the phone and answering it, the shot then turns into a tracking shot. By the voice of the person on the other side we can tell its the killer/stalker. In a way he's playing a 'game' with Casey, by answering her questions with another question. The start talking, the idea of horror films were mentioned, this therefore links the film with the genre of the film. The man asks 'Whats your favourite scary movie?' she then goes on to say that Halloween is her favourite movie, and then goes for one of the knives in the knife block, it just so happens to be the biggest one. There is then a medium shot of the popcorn cooking, the signifies that Casey is not paying attention, this also builds up the tension as if the popcorn is about to explode. He continues the quiz Casey on typical horror classics, such as Nightmare On Elm Street, and describes the killer within that, which is known to be Freddy. She then goes around locking all the doors, this this signifies that she doesn't feel safe... in her own home. The questions then go on to be more personal, such as 'do you have a boyfriend' she jokes on to signify that she isn't scared by him.
The mood soon turns when the man says 'I want to know who i'm looking at'. She looks up, then there's a zoom up of her. This reveals her face expression to be scared. There is then a dog barking in the back ground, this makes her feel even more uncomfortable, and makes the audience on edge. There is a slight change in mood when he changes his answer it 'Talking to' but this still builds up the tension of the audience. She then puts the outdoors light on, so she is able to see out the back to see if he's there. There's shots of outside from Casey's P.O.V, she is unable to see anything. However the tension is still there. There is then a close up of the popcorn still cooking, however the foil is bigger than it was the last time we saw it, this shows continuity as it shows the development within time.

    Opening sequence of Urban Legend

Urban Legend was directed by Jamie Blanks and written by Silvio Horta
After a bravura opening sequence featuring Natasha Gregson Wagner getting slaughtered by the killer with an ax hiding in the backseat of her car, Urban Legend tells the story of a group of pretty college students at a remote New England university. The focus of the story is Natalie, a beautiful, academically-gifted student at the fictional Pendleton University. Natalie and her friends are all involved in the Folklore class being taught by Professor Wexler. Wexler regales his class with urban legends, which include Pendleton's own urban legend about a Psych professor who murdered six students at Stanley Hall 25 years ago. Natalie is the first one to suspect there's a killer on campus, especially after she has ties to all of the victims. First, it's her high school friend, a guy she's in the woods with at night, her roommate... No one, including her friends, Wexler, Dean Adams and security guard, of course, believes her until it's too late and everyone begins to die according to famous urban legends, and Natalie believes it's all tied to a dark and horrible secret from her past. Now she finds that she and her friends are part of the killer's ultimate urban legend--the story of their own horrific deaths... Written by K. Wilson (on IMDB)

    Budget: $14,000,000 (estimated)

The typical target audience for this film is a lover of the horror genre. On the front of the DVD case it says
'...the bloodiest teen slasherfest to come over from the States so far...' this signifies that it is targeted towards a teenage audience. It also includes university students as the main characters, this helps as the audiences can relate to the characters.

The opening sequence of Urban Legend, the setting is important as the woman(Michelle) is driving alone, in the pouring rain on the high way. This is significant as the urban legend is based on a driver going home alone with the killer in the back seat.
While she is driving home, it is dark. The darkness connotes 'scary' and in the darkness no-one can really see who or what is about. This helps the killer as s/he is hiding in the back seat and therefore will be able to go unseen till the moment of death.
On the radio in the car, she is listening to a university radio station that is ran by a typical university girl. The women(Michelle) soon puts a tape in and listens to Bonnie Tyler, total eclipse of the heart. This is ironic as the words 'Turn around' and 'Every now and then i fall apart.' links to the scene. 'Turn around' is in its own way, telling Michelle to turn around as the killer is hiding in the back seat. Also 'every now and then i fall apart' is again telling her that she may die, as after that line the killer rises up and decapitates her.
Before the death, she goes past a lite up and populated 'gas station' and then realises she is running slow on 'gas' and goes to an eerie 'gas station' and thinks she is going to get attacked by the gas tenant, who has a stutter, and is unable to tell her someone is in the back seat before she escaped. When she drove away in her car after slightly running him over. He got up and shouted 'Someones in the back seat' this tells the audience that there is someone there waiting to kill her. To build up the tension there's lightening flashes, and in every lightening flash, the killer slowly rises up, and the light reflect on to the Axe. This makes the audience feel venerable as they don't know where to look.
